Part 2 of our winter gravel bike prep is all about getting the chain winter‑proof by waxing it with Dynamic Bike Care products.

Waxing the chain in winter! We must be mad! Wander Wax is Dynamic’s endurance hot wax, designed for gravel, long rides, and all‑weather abuse. It’s biodegradable, super quiet, and keeps your drivetrain clean even when you’re grinding through mud, rain, and winter slush.

And yes, waxing is still a killer option in winter: in wet, off‑road conditions, a proper hot wax job with Wander Wax can easily last 400–500 km before it starts to sound dry. That’s more than enough for a full month of gravel commutes, winter training, and weekend mud‑fests.

For this guide, we’re using only Dynamic Bike Care products:

  • Wander Wax – the endurance hot wax

  • Striptease – heavy‑duty degreaser to strip old lube and wax

  • Microfiber cloth – for drying and wiping

  • Waxifryer – to melt the wax and dip the chain

  • Chain Coupler (optional but handy) – to handle the chain in the wax

Step 1: Strip the Chain & Drivetrain

  1. Remove the chain from the bike using your master link or chain tool.

  2. Put the chain in a bottle or container and cover it with Striptease.

  3. Agitate it (shake or swirl) for a few minutes, then scrub with a chain brush if needed to remove old grease, oil, and wax.

  4. Rinse the chain thoroughly with water and wipe it dry with a microfiber cloth.

  5. Let the chain air‑dry completely – no moisture left inside the rollers.

Bonus: If you’re feeling fancy, give your cassette and chainrings a quick wipe with Striptease and a clean rag, then dry them too.

Step 2: Melt the Wander Wax in the Waxifryer

  1. Put Wander Wax into the Waxifryer and heat it to 75–85 °C (167–185 °F) until fully liquid and no lumps remain.

  2. Thread the dry chain through the Chain Coupler and tighten it so you have a handle.

  3. Hang the chain in a safe spot (over a drip tray or Drip Dock) while the wax heats up.

Step 3: Dip & Soak the Chain

  1. Once the wax is fully melted, slowly lower the chain into the Waxifryer so it’s completely submerged.

  2. Let it soak for at least 15 minutes – this gives the wax time to penetrate deep into every roller and pin.

  3. Gently move the chain around occasionally to help air bubbles escape and ensure even coverage.

Step 4: Cool & Drip

  1. After 15+ minutes, slowly lift the chain out of the Waxifryer and let it drip over the pot for a minute or two.

  2. Hang the chain (using the Chain Coupler) in a cool, dry place until it’s completely cold to the touch.

  3. If you’re in a hurry, a gentle breeze or fan helps, but don’t use heat – you want it to cool slowly and evenly.

Step 5: Break & Wipe

  1. Once cold, flex each chain link back and forth to “break” the wax bridges and make the chain supple again.

  2. Wipe the outside of the chain with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove excess wax.

  3. Reinstall the chain on the bike and close the master link.

Step 6: Ride & Enjoy

  1. Take a short 10–15 min warm‑up ride – this beds the wax in and pushes out any last excess.

  2. You’ll see a few wax flakes on the chainstay and chainrings; they’ll fall off as you ride, or you can wipe them off with a dry cloth.

  3. After that, enjoy a buttery‑smooth, quiet, and clean drivetrain that laughs at rain, mud, and winter gravel.

Winter & Gravel Tips

  • Winter is no problem – Wander Wax is built for all‑weather riding and can last up to 500 km in wet, off‑road conditions.

  • For gravel, this means fewer stops to re‑lube and a drivetrain that stays clean even after muddy forest tracks and river crossings.

  • Between waxings, just run the chain through a dry cloth and brush off any wax residue from the cassette and chainrings – no need to degrease every time.
